I have an evaluation scheduled, now what?
During an evaluation, the team will be looking for skills that your child has. Most often, at this age, your child will be ‘tested’ using a play-based approach. This means there is an adult who plays with your child, while you, as the parent, provide information about your child. The answers you give the team will help them assess consistency and try to determine skills that they might not see during your evaluation. The play is intentional. They are looking for what your child can do, and believe it or not we can see a lot during play! When the play portion of the evaluation is complete, the team will share skills that were observed and skills that were not yet present. This is then how they determine if your child is delayed in any areas of development. Be ready to answer questions and to hear feedback from the evaluation team. If your child is delayed enough to qualify for special education services you will then begin the process of building a special education plan for growth (Individualized Family Service Plan for 2 or younger or an Individualized Education Plan for 3 or older). If your child does not qualify for special education services the team will most likely give you areas to watch for, or strategies to help support any concerns that had brought you in for the evaluation. If you have questions about your evaluation results, or need support at home with strategies for your child after an evaluation please reach out! I would be happy to see if there is a way I can continue to support your and your child.
