My child has a delay, now what?
During the evaluation, the IEP team determined that your child has a delay. This means your child is not demonstrating skills at his or her chronological age, in one or more areas of development. For example, your 5 year old child has the communication skills of a 5 year old, however, he/she is not able to count objects or attend to a book. This would indicate a delay in academic skills for his/her age. At the IEP meeting your evaluators should explain the strengths (skills observed to be appropriate for his/her age) and the needs (skills that were delayed for his/her age). Now that everyone is aware of your child’s needs and strengths the IEP will be written. Your child’s needs will become the IEP goals and will determine which provider(s) will support your child while at school.
